John Landon Best
John Landon Best was born on February 19, 1827...or was it July
25, 1828... John's tombstone shows one date and his death certificate
shows another. He was the son on Conrad Best and Catherine Louks
from Bayham Township, Elgin, Ontario, Canada. He married Dorothy
Emeline Silverthorn on October 12, 1851 in Elgin, Ontario. They had
six children; Walter(1858), Nellie (1860), Alvin (1862), Alice(
1864), Wm Harris (1868), Harvey Wm (1868) all of whom were born in
Canada. John, Emeline and the children are listed in the Canadian
Census for the years 1861 and 1871. I have been unable to determine
when John and Emeline came to Michigan but eventually they ended up in Columbiaville, Michigan area. Nellie, my GGGrandmother
married Newton Losee in 1877. The confusion continues with John's
death. John's Death Certificate show that he died on May 8, 1898 yet
his tombstone indicates that he died on May 28, 1897.
